Intercultural Courses on Offer for International Students

The International Office’s range of studies is conducted in cooperation with the Foreign Language Centre and addresses exclusively international students at the University of Applied Sciences Schmalkalden. It is equally suited for students in an exchange, single-degree or double-degree programme and completely free of cost. The range of courses is supposed to add comprehensive intercultural, linguistic and country-specific contents to the academic studies in the single faculties, thereby contributing to a reflected, inclusive and successful study visit in Germany. The study programme is completed with a certificate on the successfully passed events and is rated with credit points, in addition. The respective syllabi contain details on the specific achievements to be performed. The course of studies is divided into four study areas, which complement one another and pursue individual targets themselves: (a) Language and Communication, (b) Introduction to German Studies, (c) Introduction to International Relations and European Studies as well as (d) International Electives.

 

(a) Language and Communication

In the study area “Language and Communication” we offer both general and applied language courses that are complemented by lectures on intercultural sensitisation. German language courses during the semester address all foreign students wishing to develop or broaden their German skills during their stay in Germany. There is a placement test at the beginning of the semester to classify students according to the ECFR levels A1 to C1. The courses on “Business English” prepare the students for demanding professional activities in an international context and are also offered within several skill levels. The complementary courses on interculturality aim at an enlightened and reflected foreign experience with intercultural awareness. The range of courses for the winter term 2017/18 is as follows:

  • Business English (beginners) (Ms Bagchi, 2 weekly lecture hours, 3 ECTS)
  • Business English (pre-intermediate) (Ms Müller, 2 weekly lecture hours, 3 ECTS)
  • Business English and English for Business Communication (upper-intermediate / advanced) (Ms Müller, 4 weekly lecture hours, 5 ECTS)
  • Intercultural Business Communication (Ms Bagchi, 4 weekly lecture hours, 5 ECTS)

 

(b) Introduction to German Studies

The study area “Introduction to German Studies” is supposed to facilitate the students’ orientation in the host country, to sensitise them to cultural and country-specific characteristics in Germany as well as to impart knowledge on Germany according to the “area studies”. Students are highly recommended to join the introductory event offered both in German (for ECFR level B1 and higher) and in English. Furthermore, the International Office offers field trips to various destinations in order for the students to gather country-specific experience outside the study location. It should be noted that these trips are not compensated with credit points and involve a small personal financial contribution. The offer for the winter term 2017/18 is as follows:

  • Introduction to German Studies (Mr Bauch, 2 weekly lecture hours, 3 ECTS)
  • Einführung in die Deutschlandstudien (Mr Bauch, 2 weekly lecture hours, 3 ECTS)
  • Applied German Studies: Berlin (Mr Hornung, Field Trip, no ECTS)
  • Applied German Studies: Munich (Mr Hornung, Field Trip, no ECTS)

 

(c) Introduction to International Relations and European Studies

The study area “Introduction to International Relations and European Studies” addresses students from outside Europe as well as all other students interested in the socio-scientific analysis of international relations. There is a specific introduction in every semester, which is also suitable for beginners. Plus, there is a broadening course on European and/or international relations whose topic changes with each semester. The offer for the winter term 2017/18 (all in English) is as follows:

  • Introduction to International Relations and European Studies (Mr Ogola, 2 weekly lecture hours, 3 ECTS)
  • Applied International Relations and European Studies: Europe and Migration (Mr Ogola, 2 weekly lecture hours, 3 ECTS)

 

(d) International Electives

The range of courses within the area “International Electives” is supplemented by courses on changing subjects in English. Those events cover comprehensive international aspects relevant to students from all fields. The offer for the winter term 2017/18 (all in English) is as follows:

  • Principles of International Marketing (Ms Bagchi, 2 weekly lecture hours, 3 ECTS)
  • Global Market Research: Project (Ms Bagchi, 4 weekly lecture hours, 5 ECTS)
