Outgoing students

Study-related stays abroad have long been a standard part of successful degree programmes: every year, more than 4 million students worldwide are internationally mobile. There are many different possibilities for study-related international mobility, such as a semester abroad, an internship abroad, an excursion etc.

Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences makes it easy for its students to make their own experiences abroad: Contacts to around 200 partner universities are available, as well as integrations into mobility consortia and the possibility of financing stays abroad through various EU or DAAD programmes. The following pages will give you an initial orientation on the many possibilities for study-related stays abroad.

Study abroad

We are pleased that you have informed yourself about the possibility of spending part of your studies abroad at one of our partner universities, or that you have already decided to do so. There are good reasons for studying abroad. Concerns about financing or disadvantages due to a possible later graduation are usually unfounded. In the following, we will inform you about everything you need to know about the topic of exchange studies.

You have the opportunity to study abroad within the framework of various programmes.

Internship abroad

Many of the good reasons for studying abroad can also be applied to an internship abroad: You gain practical work experience in another country - an experience that absolutely pays off both personally and professionally – and you develop intercultural and language skills.

Although the Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences itself does not promote internships abroad, there are various contact points that can help you. If you want to do an internship in one of the Erasmus programme countries, EU-Praktikum Thüringen in Ilmenau can help you. It will provide information on how to apply and promote your stay.

Please note that you can receive funding for an internship abroad of up to six months during your Bachelor's degree and again during your Master's degree and additionally for a study abroad of up to six months.

The website www.auslandspraktikum.info has further tips for you, as well as for internships in countries that are not represented in the ERASMUS network. We put together further useful links for you below:

Other mobility formats

A large proportion of German students undertake a study or work placement abroad to gain insight and experience in foreign educational and working environments over a longer period of time. However, depending on your mobility interests, it may also make sense to choose a different mobility format to gain structured experience abroad. These offers are usually announced via the foreign coordinators of the faculties as well as by the International Office; some are also organised by professors at Schmalkalden University itself.

Funding opportunities

There are a variety of funding options for your stay abroad, including DAAD scholarships, Auslands-BAföG, Fulbright and many more. Special attention is drawn to the possibility of funding within the framework of the DAAD's PROMOS programme. You can apply for this directly at the International Office of Schmalkalden University.
