Dodgeball Rules

Teams and Game Objective

Two teams of 6 players each compete against each other with one ball. Players are eliminated by being hit with the ball. The team that loses all its players first or has fewer players at the end of the game time (10 minutes) loses. Each team consists of 5 field players and one captain.

Crossing the Line

If a player crosses the sideline, they are automatically eliminated and must leave the field. A slight crossing with one foot while catching the ball is allowed. When the game is paused, players may cross the sideline to retrieve the ball.

Game Start

The captain receives the ball. Before throwing the ball at opponents, there must be at least one exchange of the ball between field players on the opposite side. After a player is hit, the team whose player was last hit gets the ball. The ball is then immediately in play, and throwing is allowed.

Gameplay

When a player is hit, they must leave the field immediately. The referee pauses the game and resumes it once both teams are ready. Only then can play continue. The rule of "heating up" the ball is not applied! Once the referee whistles, throwing is immediately allowed. The only exception is at the start of the game. If only two field players are left on a team, the captain joins the field as reinforcement. The opposite side is then unoccupied.

Throwing

The ball can be passed between field players or the captain any number of times. To prevent delays, an attempt to throw must be made within about 10 seconds. The referee decides when this time is up and announces that a throw must occur. If this call is ignored, the team loses possession of the ball. A player is considered hit if a ball thrown by an opponent bounces off them and cannot be caught by them or their teammates. Teammates cannot be eliminated. If the ball hits the ground first, the throw does not count. Both field players and the captain can throw at opponents. If the ball goes out of bounds, the team that last touched it loses possession. The referee resumes the game when the opposing team has the ball.

Catching

To catch the ball, the player must be standing within the field. Arms may extend over the boundary to catch a ball going out of bounds. Only one foot may slightly step out; otherwise, the player is considered hit (due to crossing the line), regardless of whether they caught the ball. A ball that bounces off a teammate but has not yet touched the ground or gone out of bounds can be caught to save that player from elimination. If the attempt fails, only the initially hit player is eliminated. Multiple players cannot be eliminated simultaneously.

Referee

There is a designated head referee who makes the final decisions. For each game, an uninvolved team must provide line judges who position themselves at the four corners of the field and signal to the referee whether a ball is out of bounds or a player has crossed the line. Which team will serve as line judges will be announced with the game schedule.

Miscellaneous

The ball may be touched with any part of the body. However, throwing at the opponent is explicitly only allowed with the hands. Violations, such as kicking the ball, will be penalized with a warning or even elimination. The same applies to any other form of unsportsmanlike conduct. The game time continues even if the referee pauses the game, except for major interruptions (injury, ball loss, etc.).
