Bachelor Mechatronics & Robotics (B.Eng.)
Mechatronics and robotics are two important key technologies for the upcoming digital revolution in economy, science, society and public administration. Mechatronics bases on three engineering sciences: mechanical, electrical and software engineering. They are the basic components of Industry 4.0 and thus play a decisive role in determining the manufacturing and production processes of the digital future.
The Bachelor's programme in Mechatronics and Robotics is a seven-semester, full-time course programme with a high proportion of practical training. It is modularized and accredited according to current standards. The workload is 210 ECTS credit points. The degree qualifies you for a job as engineer in european industry. After graduation a continuation of study in a consecutive master's course programme of three semesters is possible.
If you are applying from a country outside the EU and prove a university entrance qualification from your home country, you can qualify for further studies by passing probationary studies within the first two semesters.
Another focus of education in addition to engineering training is the foreign and technical language German, including application training for employment in industry.
At the beginning of the third semester you can assign to one of the two specialization subjects: mechanical or electrical engineering. Accordingly, you can choose your elective subjects and the topics of your industrial internship and bachelor's thesis.

The course programme consists of three main periods: five semesters of face-to-face education, engineering internship of 6 month and bachelor thesis of 3 month. The study starts with lectures, exercises and lab exercises with focus on mechanical and electrical engineering, computer programming, german language and robotics lab exercises. The scope per semester is six subjects including six examinations at the end of each semester. During the first two semesters are offered obligatory subjects only. From the third semester you can also take part in elective courses.
The educational training in the basic course period bases on the standards of engineering training in Germany for mechanical engineering and electrical engineering. Here you will learn the basics of design and product development, the basics of electrical engineering and electronic circuit development and a lot about technical physics, mechanics and computers. In the higher semesters there are specialized teaching units for robotics, the use of robots in production and applications of artificial intelligence and robot vision. The training is rounded off with elements from manufacturing technology, quality management and enterprise logistics.
For applications to the English-language bachelor's programme Mechatronics and Robotics (B.Eng.), no proof of German is required. However, applicants must prove English language skills by one of the following certificates:
- IELTS: min. 6.5 points
- TOEFL: min. 86 points (internet-based)
Additional information: English as native language is accepted. Proof of English as medium of instruction in other bachelor programmes will not be accepted for admission.
Furthermore, you will need to prove your university entrance qualification equivalent to German high-school diploma ("Abitur"). In most cases, this will be your high-school certificate. On www.anabin.de you can find out how your high-school degree is rated in Germany.
If your high-school diploma does not qualify you to enter studies in Germany, you instead have the option to take part on a probationary study within the first two semesters of your bachelor's programme. You are required to pass succesfull 50% of examination performances to be allowed to complete the study at Schmalkalden University. If you are able to gain 30 ECTS points during the period of your temporary enrolment (two semesters) you have fulfilled the requirements for the admission process and will be enrolled as a regular student. After your documents have been reviewed, you will be informed of your registration for the admission process. After your registration you will be enrolled like any other degree-seeking student, however on a temporary enrolment for two semesters.
This is only possible when applying for a Bachelor's degree programme; Master's degree programmes are exempted from that option.
Further options for admission to the bachelor degree programme in Schmalkalden are proved examination performances from undergraduate studies abroad in a acknowledged course programme (www.anabin.de) with engineering contents either:
- examination performances from one successfully completed year of undergraduate (bachelor) study. In general these are examination performances of scope of at least 60 ECTS-Credits
- or completed undergraduate (bachelor) engineering study, prove with diploma certificate required
To enrol for the admission process, you will need to apply for a bachelor's degree programme with all the needed documentation as listed below, this includes all the required language certifications. You can only apply for one Bachelor's degree programme at a time.
In any case, these are all the documents you need to provide when applying at Schmalkalden University for a full degree:
- Informal cover letter
- Completed application form
- IELTS or TOEFL certificate
- officially certified photocopy of the higher education entrance qualification (e.g. school leaving certificate) and translation in German or English
- alternatively: diploma certificate of a completed engineering study or certified grades list of one sucessfull completed year of university engineering course programme. Both documents have to be officially certified.
- Copy of birth certificate or identity card
- passport photo for student ID card
- if applicable, certificate of exmatriculation (if studying at a previous university)
Please note that applicants with degrees from India, Vietnam and China must also enclose a valid APS certificate with their application. Be sure to apply for your APS certificate in your home country in good time.
