For studying at a German university, it is obligatory to prove sufficient health insurance coverage before enrolling for the start of the semester. A travel insurance is not sufficient.
If you have been admitted as a degree seeker or invited as an exchange student, SUAS will ask you to send a valid proof of this coverage beforehand via a public German health insurance provider. You can take care of the health insurance requirement even from abroad before arrival.
Your chosen insurance must provide the student's administration with an M10 Certificate. See the following Info Sheet to explore more about this topic in specific:
After successful enrolment you are ready to receive your student ID card (“Thoska”). Contact studentenbuero@hs-schmalkalden.de to get a "Thoska Request Form" with which you can apply for your Student ID Card.
Once the form is filled and submitted, after around 1 to 2 weeks you will receive an E-mail to pick up your card at the Student Service Zone.
Your Thoska grants you free public transport in local and regional trains (no long-distance/high-speed trains!) within the Free State of Thuringia.
Moreover, it allows you a discount in the campus food court as well as at various venues such as cinemas, sport stadiums, swimming pools etc. Plus, you can use it for access to the university library, to use the printers on campus, laundry machines and others.
City Registration or Anmeldung in der Stadt is the process of registering your address (or Domicile) in Germany. You need to register within 14 days of moving into your new home, otherwise you could face fines.
The registration can be done at the townhall in the city center.
