Equivalent vocational training - your path to Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences! 🎓

No high school diploma or technical college entrance qualification? No problem! You can still study at Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences if you have the relevant further vocational training. Many further training courses and qualifications are recognized as equivalent university entrance qualifications. For example, you will be admitted if you meet one of the following criteria:

  • Master craftsman's examination or equivalent further vocational training
  • State-certified technician or business administrator
  • Other recognized further vocational training
  • Professional qualification through training & work experience

The Thuringian ordinance on the equivalence of further vocational training for university admission regulates whether your further training entitles you to study. Check your options or let us advise you directly. ✅

Application procedure ⏳

This is how the application works:

1️⃣ Registration - You will receive your user ID and the activation code

2️⃣ Create application - Fill out the online application

3️⃣ Select semester - Usually the 1st semester

4️⃣ Upload documents - e.g. degree certificate, etc.

5️⃣ Review - Your application will be reviewed and you will receive feedback

6️⃣ Admission - If your application is successful, you will receive a letter of admission, which may be subject to conditions

7️⃣ Enrolment - After paying the semester fee, submitting the health insurance certificate and the required documents, you are officially enrolled

8️⃣ Start of studies - Your studies at Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences can begin! 🚀

Required documents 📜

To ensure that your application to Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences runs smoothly, you will need the following documents:

✔️ Degree certificate (depending on your eligibility for admission - master craftsman's certificate, etc.)
✔️ The electronic certificate from your health insurance company will be requested in due course during the application process 
✔️ Program-related documents (e.g. TOEFL test result for International Business and Economics)
✔️ Exmatriculation certificate (if you were previously enrolled)
✔️ Clearance certificate (for previous studies)

The required documents will be uploaded to the application portal during the application process on request.

For German Bachelor’s & Master’s programs:

➡️ Winter semester: April 1 – July 15
➡️ Summer semester: October 1 – January 15

If the application period is extended, we will inform you via news & social media.

For English-taught Bachelor’s & Master’s programs:

➡️ Winter semester (applications open from February 1)
🔹 Until May 15: Mechatronics & Robotics (M.Eng.) + Applied Computer Science (M.Sc.)
🔹 Until June 15: International Business & Economics (B.A. & M.A.) + Finance (M.Sc.)

➡️ Summer semester (applications open from September 1)
🔹 Until November 15: Mechatronics & Robotics (B.Eng.)
🔹 Until December 15: All other Bachelor’s & Master’s programs

Trial Studies – Study without a High School Diploma 🎓

Do you have a completed vocational training and at least three years of work experience in a related field? Then you can study with us even without a university entrance qualification – through trial studies, no high school diploma required!

The exact regulations can be found in the Thuringian Higher Education Act – § 70 (1) ThürHG.
An aptitude test (§ 70 (2)) is not offered at Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences. You can find the university’s regulations on this matter here.

Application to an English-language Master's programme

Note for Master's applications – fees for certificate examination

When applying for a Master's degree programme, proof of a Bachelor's or engineering degree is required. If this degree was not obtained in Germany, it must be checked individually at the university. An administration fee of EUR 50 per process is charged to this end (amount per application for a programme). The fee is paid during the application process.
