Ceremonial certificate presentation at W.AG in Geisa: International students as skilled workers for the region

At the end of last year, more than ten international students from Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences successfully completed the SUAS Premier support program. The ceremonial presentation of the graduation certificates took place at the premises of W.AG in Geisa, underscoring the program's close practical relevance and the importance of regional companies for securing skilled workers in southern Thuringia.

SUAS Premier is a project funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), and the ProfiPlus program. The aim is to prepare international graduates of Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences specifically for entry into the German labor market and to retain them in the region in the long term. The program is coordinated by Jayabadhrinath Krushnan, himself a graduate of the university.

The modular qualification program is specifically aimed at international students studying STEM subjects. It combines practical technical training, intensive language support, and insights into work culture and the regional job market. SUAS Premier is thus responding specifically to obstacles identified by both companies and international professionals—particularly with regard to job-related German language skills and practical experience.

The award ceremony was deliberately combined with a company visit. The host was W.AG in Geisa, an internationally active manufacturer of innovative plastic cases in the B2B sector. The company is considered a “hidden champion” and is a prime example of the performance capabilities of medium-sized industry in the region. In addition to a high degree of flexibility and innovative strength, W.AG also focuses on sustainable materials and production processes.

For participants, the visit offered direct insight into a potential working environment, while for companies it provided an opportunity to connect with qualified international young professionals. Programs such as SUAS Premier thus make a concrete contribution to securing skilled workers and strengthening the links between universities, international young professionals, and the regional economy.
