Application and enrolment procedure

(I) Procedure

Once you have made your choice of study programme, it is very important that you submit your online application or your written application before the application deadline. You can find an overview of the application deadlines for all Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes at our university here:

National applicants with a German university entrance qualification please use the online form for their application for all Bachelor's degree programmes at Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences:

An online application is already possible if you do not have your final Abitur grade etc. yet. Please enter your expected grade point average. A subsequent correction will be made after the student administration has received your certified copy of your final school leaving certificate.

International applicants with a foreign university entrance qualification (HZB) should apply in writing for a place on a Bachelor's degree programme. You can find all information on this as well as the application for admission here:

National and international applicants who would like to apply for an English-language Master's programme should also use the online form. You can find this and further information on the respective faculty pages:

(II) Health insurance

Students at state universities in Germany are required to have health insurance. International students must also have sufficient health insurance if they wish to study in Germany.

We require an electronic notification of your insurance status (M10) from your health insurance company at the latest at the time of enrolment. Please contact your health insurance provider in good time and quote our sender number H0001281. Your health insurance company will then send the required notification to us.

(III) Semester contribution

The semester contribution is a compulsory fee that every student at a German university has to pay before each semester. It consists of the basic fee for the Studierendenwerk, the Thüringenticket DB Regio (semester ticket) and a fee for the student council (StuRa).

The following fees are charged upon enrolment or re-registration:

Long-term students pay an additional long-term study fee of 500 euros. Further information can be found in §4 Paragraph 1 of the Thuringian University Fees and Charges Act (ThürHGEG) of 21 December 2006:

Students who have significantly exceeded their standard period of study (at least 4 semesters) pay additional long-term study fees of 500 euros. The obligation to pay is notified to the students concerned by means of a separate notice. It is possible to apply for exemption from the obligation to pay fees. Further information on this can be found in §4 Para. 1 of the Thuringian University Fees and Charges Act (ThürHGEG) of 21 December 2006:

Students in continuing education programmes have also had to pay a semester contribution to the Studierendenwerk Thüringen since the summer semester 2015. This contribution consists of the reduced student union contribution, the contribution for the student body and the DB Regio semester ticket valid within Thuringia.

According to § 6 Para. 4 of the contribution regulations of the Studierendenwerk Thüringen, students in a continuing education programme with an attendance time of less than 20 days per semester can apply for an exemption from this semester ticket. You can find more information here:

In addition, according to § 6 Para. 5 of the contribution regulations of the Studierendenwerk Thüringen, national or international students in cooperative study programmes as well as other participants in cooperative study programmes (e.g. double degree programmes) can be exempted from the obligation to pay contributions for the semesters in which they do not stay or only stay for a maximum of one month in the area of application of the Basic Law. Students who can prove that they will not be at Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences for more than 21 weeks in the semester can apply for reimbursement of their semester ticket (Thüringenticket DB Regio) at the Studierendenwerk Thüringen. Further information can be found here:

(IV) Special case of subject semester classification (lateral entry into a higher subject semester)

If you are already studying and would like to change your university and continue studying in the degree programme of the same name at Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences, then you can apply for entry into a higher subject semester. Cross-entry into a higher semester is not possible if you have a final failed examination (exmatriculation for subject-related reasons) in the degree programme of the same name at a higher education institution within the area of application of the Basic Law. (V) Special case of secondary enrolment

If you are already enrolled at a German university and are not on leave of absence, you can be admitted to our university as a second student (for one semester).

(VI) Guest auditor

If you are interested in attending lectures at our university without being enrolled as a regular student, you can register as a guest student. You do not need a university entrance qualification (e.g. Abitur, Fachhochschulreife, etc.). Participation in the lectures is subject to a fee and is valid for one semester. The application form must be submitted by the start of lectures:
