English-Taught Courses for Exchange Students in Winter Semester 2026/2027

Exchange students can attend any number of the English-taught classes listed on this page across all faculties and take the respective examinations. English-taught classes that are not listed on this page are not permitted for exchange students to register for examinations. If you would like to take German-taught classes across faculties as an exchange student, we appreciate this; please inform yourself about the German-language courses on offer via the curricula of the individual degree programmes and complete this form and send it to the Mobility Administration within one month of the start of the semester.

The courses are for all international incoming students and are only offered before the semester starts. A participation is not possible during the semester.

For exchange students: You may choose from all English-taught courses listed in this catalogue, regardless of faculty, and take the corresponding examinations. Exchange students may only register for examinations in English-taught courses included in this catalogue.

Exchange students are also welcome to attend German-taught courses offered by the individual faculties. Please consult the curricula of the respective degree programmes for available courses. 

To register for a German-taught course, please complete the relevant form and submit it to the Mobility Administration within one month of the start of the semester.

We offer German language courses from A1 to C1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The International School offers applied English language courses designed to strengthen students’ communication skills in academic and professional contexts. Business English focuses on effective communication in an international workplace, while our intercultural courses support the development of intercultural awareness and competence. Additional courses in academic writing and presentation skills help students meet the demands of an international academic environment. Germany & Europe: Introduction to German Studies

The courses in this study area help international students become familiar with Germany, its culture and society, and the German higher education system. Students are strongly encouraged to attend the introductory workshop offered in English. In addition, excursions organised by the International Office provide opportunities to explore German culture, history and society beyond Schmalkalden. Please note that a small personal contribution may be required for some excursions.

Germany & Europe: Introduction to European Studies

The study area “Introduction to International Relations and European Studies” is aimed at students from outside Europe as well as all other students interested in the social-scientific analysis of international relations. An introductory course is offered every semester and is also suitable for beginners.
