Making the electricity supply in Thuringia more flexible to facilitate decarbonisation: regional integration with hydrogen technologies and the associated grid infrastructure (H2-FlexiDekarb)

Subject of research

  • Identification, assessment and development of scenarios involving hydrogen technologies for the future design of gas and electricity infrastructure in Thuringia
  • Legal analysis as a cross-cutting task spanning all project phases and objectives
  • Ensuring regulatory and planning viability, and translating technical concepts into legally sound models
  • Simulation and analysis of operational scenarios to determine the potential for integrated operation of the electricity and hydrogen networks in Thuringia from a technical and economic perspective, including validation through pilot plant trials and the identification of ‘synergy nodes’

Results

  • Development of a dynamic network model for a combined electricity and hydrogen infrastructure in Thuringia, including the necessary operational management concepts
  • Development of a catalogue of legal requirements for the approval of hydrogen (H2) facilities, as well as draft texts for civil law agreements between stakeholders in the energy sector to implement the integrated supply concept
  • Development of a transfer concept in the form of a white paper, containing recommendations and a catalogue of measures for an integrated energy supply system comprising electricity and hydrogen in Thuringia
