The Senate is the university’s highest self-governing body. It consists of three representatives of the professors, three representatives of academic and non-academic staff, and three student representatives. Members of the university management participate in the meetings in an advisory capacity. In matters of an “academic nature”, four additional professors serve as voting members of the Senate.
The Senate plays a decisive role in shaping the academic life of the university. For example, it decides on matters of fundamental importance to research, on the establishment or modification of degree programmes and the internal structure of self-governing bodies, as well as on the university’s constitution.
The body comments on proposals for appointments and on the annual accounts and annual report, and gives its approval prior to the conclusion of the university’s target and performance agreements with the Ministry.
In addition, the Senate participates in the election of the President, the Chancellor and the members of the University Council.
Further duties are listed in the Thuringian Higher Education Act (Section 35).
