Recently, Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences had the pleasure of welcoming some very special guests: alumni celebrating 20, 40, and even 50 years since their graduation. Graduates from the Economics and Law program (class of 2005), as well as former students of the Engineering School Schmalkalden (class years 1985 and 1975), returned to their alma mater and participated in a diverse campus program.
For the alumni from engineering disciplines, a visit to the current Faculty of Mechanical Engineering was a particular highlight. Uwe Römhild, a laboratory engineer at the faculty and an alumnus himself, guided the guests through the modern workshops and laboratories. With great enthusiasm, he shared stories of the numerous technical developments and architectural changes over the decades. The new buildings and state-of-the-art facilities visibly impressed the visitors. Another program highlight was the tour of the new university library. In addition to the bright, airy reading rooms and modern workspaces, a multimedia photo documentation particularly caught the eye: It vividly illustrated how the campus grounds and the university structure have evolved since the 1970s.
The Faculty of Business and Economics also took the opportunity to welcome its alumni. During the ceremonial certificate awards for this year’s International Summer School, as well as the official graduation ceremony for the class of 2025, alumni from various years came together, also taking advantage of the chance for international exchange.
Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences is proud of the lasting bond it shares with its alumni, reflected not only in regular visits but also in their diverse and dedicated engagement. Former students actively contribute to the university’s ongoing development, enrich academic life, and help strengthen the connection between academia and the professional world. Many emphasized how enriching and formative their time at Schmalkalden was for their careers – both professionally and personally.
The next central alumni event will take place in 2027 and is already in planning. Alumni from all faculties are warmly invited to attend and take the opportunity to reconnect, network, and celebrate together. If you would like to update your contact information or stay informed about upcoming alumni activities, you can easily do so through the alumni portal of Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences or by sending an email to alumni(at)hs-schmalkalden.de. We look forward to welcoming you at the next event!
