As part of the CampusThüringenTour, 19 high school students in grades 10 through 13 from the states of Thuringia, Saxony, Brandenburg, Lower Saxony, and Rhineland-Palatinate visited Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences on Monday. Two female students from Schmalkalden showed the high school students around the campus and talked about their studies. Afterward, the participants had the opportunity to solder active boxes under expert guidance.
Under the motto “Young Women Successfully Study STEM in Thuringia,” the high school students visit eight Thuringian universities over the course of a week. At each stop, they learn about the universities and their various degree programs. Demonstrations, workshops, lab and campus tours, as well as academic advising sessions, provide practical insights into the world of mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, and technology. A key part of the tour is the direct interaction with current students on campus. They share stories about their daily student life, pass on personal experiences, and give the participants an authentic glimpse into life at a university.
The CampusThüringenTour is a collaborative project—unique in Germany—involving eight universities in Thuringia, and this marks its 19th edition. The goal of the tour is to inspire girls and young women at an early stage to pursue higher education and a career in STEM fields. At the same time, participants have the opportunity to compare their own interests and aspirations with specific academic programs, thereby gaining guidance for their individual choice of major.
