Neben den fachlichen Inhalten bot die Tagung auch Raum für Kommunikation und Austausch unter den Teilnehmenden.

The German toolmaking industry—an important economic driver in the region—is currently facing considerable challenges: rising raw material prices, global supply bottlenecks, and growing bureaucratic pressure are weighing on production and cost structures. At the same time, stricter sustainability requirements and shorter innovation cycles are changing the operating environment.

The latest Schmalkalden Tool Conference, attended by medium-sized companies and renowned research institutions, focused on efficiency, sustainability, and economic stability. The conference is jointly organized by the GFE (Gesellschaft für Fertigungstechnik und Entwicklung Schmalkalden e.V.), Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences, and the German Engineering Federation (VDMA). The industry emphasized that ecological and economic goals do not have to be contradictory. Efficiency gains through process optimization and intelligent use of resources could simultaneously reduce costs and support environmental goals.

A key issue was the supply of strategic raw materials such as hard metals, which have become scarce and expensive on the world market. To reduce risks, companies are increasingly focusing on material recovery and internal security strategies. Another key area is technological development: approaches such as simulation-supported tool development and modular manufacturing are intended to shorten throughput times and strengthen competitiveness. The use of digital tools and data analysis is also considered key to increasing efficiency.

Qualified specialists and cooperation between companies and research institutions remain crucial for the regional economy in order to secure innovative strength and attractiveness as a business location. The industry is signaling confidence: with targeted investments in technology and further training, it intends to maintain and expand its performance despite difficult conditions.
